The 25 automatic discounts limit

Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read

Shopify allows a maximum of 25 active automatic discounts per store, and "This total includes app-based discounts" (Automatic discounts). This is a Shopify limit, not a Hype Bundles limit, and there is no plan or setting that raises it.

The same ceiling appears on the developer side: "You can activate a maximum of 25 discount functions on each store" (Discount Function API).

What counts toward the 25

CountsDoesn't count
Active automatic discounts you created in ShopifyDiscount codes, of any type or quantity
Active automatic discounts created by any app, including Hype BundlesDeactivated automatic discounts
Expired automatic discounts

Every live Hype Bundles campaign holds one of those 25 slots, because a Hype Bundles campaign is a Shopify Function discount and Shopify lists it as an automatic discount with an app badge next to its name.

Discount codes are not affected. A store at the 25-discount ceiling can still create and run code discounts — see Discount codes and their limits.

How to see how many slots you're using

  1. Open Discounts in your Shopify admin.
  2. Filter the list by Discount method → Automatic.
  3. Filter by Status → Active.
  4. Count the rows. Anything with an app badge belongs to an app and still counts.

The Combinations column in that same list shows which other discounts each one is allowed to stack with, which is useful when you are deciding what to switch off.

How to free a slot

Deactivating is reversible; deleting is not.

  1. Open Discounts and select the discounts you no longer need.
  2. Choose Deactivate to turn one off temporarily — Shopify describes this as a way to "Temporarily deactivate an unexpired discount," and you can reactivate it later.
  3. Choose Delete only when you want it gone for good: this "Permanently delete[s] a discount to remove it from the Discounts list."

Bulk actions exist for deactivating, reactivating, and deleting several discounts at once (Managing discounts).

To free a slot held by Hype Bundles, deactivate or delete the campaign inside Hype Bundles rather than in Shopify's Discounts list, so the app and Shopify stay in agreement about what is live.

Giving a discount an end date is the low-effort version of the same thing: a start date is required but an end date is optional, and a discount with no end date never expires and keeps its slot forever (Free shipping). Seasonal promotions that were never given an end date are the most common reason a store quietly fills up.

What happens when the limit is reached

A 26th automatic discount cannot be active, whether you create it in the admin or an app creates it for you. The 25 already running are unaffected — the limit bites on activation. Free a slot by deactivating or deleting an active automatic discount, then activate the new one.

If a Hype Bundles campaign fails to go live and your store already has 25 active automatic discounts, this limit is the first thing to check — the campaign is not broken, there is simply no slot for it.

A note on multi-class discounts

An app discount can carry more than one saving — a percentage off and free shipping, say — inside a single discount (Discounts with apps). That is still one discount and one slot, not two. It does affect stacking, though: a discount with several classes "can combine only with other discounts that allow combinations with all of the included discount classes."
