Busy months and tier changes
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
A busy 30-day cycle is billed at the tier its order count reached. The next cycle starts again from Free. A tier never carries over. One big month does not put you on a higher price permanently, and a quiet month is not billed at last month's tier.
Inside a cycle, the tier only goes up
Hype counts your paid orders as the cycle runs. Each time the count crosses into a new tier, the difference between the tier you were on and the new one is charged. The amounts add up to the new tier's price — they are not stacked on top of it.
A worked example. The prices below are illustrative — take your own from the All prices table on the Plan page — but the mechanics are the same on every Hype plan. Say Starter costs $39 and Growth $79:
| Day of the cycle | Paid orders so far | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1–6 | 0 → 94 | Free. Nothing is charged. |
| 7 | 101 | Starter is reached. $39 is charged. |
| 8–19 | 101 → 498 | Still Starter. Nothing more is charged. |
| 20 | 501 | Growth is reached. $40 is charged — the difference. The cycle has now cost $79 in total. |
| 21–30 | 501 → 900 | Still Growth. Nothing more is charged. |
Each tier can only be charged once per cycle, so re-crossing a threshold never charges twice.
The tier is never lowered inside the cycle
Once a cycle has reached a tier, that is what the cycle costs. Cancelling orders, refunding them, or pausing your offers for the rest of the month does not move the tier back down and does not produce a refund for that cycle. This is stated in the plan terms Shopify shows you when you approve the subscription: the cycle is billed at the highest tier its order count reaches, and it is never lowered or refunded within that cycle.
The next cycle starts from zero
When the 30 days end, Shopify starts a new billing period and the count restarts at 0. Your tier for the new cycle is decided entirely by the orders in it.
So a store that does 3,000 orders in November and 80 in December pays the Scale price for the November cycle and nothing for the December cycle. There is no minimum, no downgrade request and nothing to switch back.
Two charges in one calendar month
Cycles are 30 days from when you approved the subscription, not calendar months. Two charges can therefore land in the same calendar month — for example a cycle that crossed into Starter near the end of one period, and the next period crossing again a few weeks later. Check the dates on each line in Billing history: if the two charges belong to different cycles, both are correct.
A crossing right at the end of a cycle
Hype re-checks your count on a schedule and again shortly before each cycle closes. A tier crossed in the last minutes of a cycle can occasionally be missed — in which case it is not billed, rather than being carried into the next cycle. It never works against you.
What if my order volume drops permanently?
Nothing to do. Your bill follows your orders down automatically, cycle by cycle, to $0 if you go under 101 paid orders. You do not need to cancel or downgrade to stop paying for a quiet period, and you do not need to uninstall — uninstalling deletes your configuration. See Uninstalling Hype.
