Frequently bought together
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
Frequently bought together suggests companion products on the product pages you choose and discounts the combination. It comes in two styles that behave differently: Bought together discounts the whole group including the page product, and Add-ons discounts only the extras.
Unlike the other bundle types, this one leads with where it appears — the first section in the wizard is Show on.
Create one
- From the home page, click Create offer, then Choose on Bought together or Add-ons.
- In Show on, pick where the suggestions appear:
- Specific products — the product pages you pick, one or many.
- Specific collections — every product page in the picked collections. Products added to a collection later are included automatically.
- All products — every product page in your store.
- In Suggested products, click Add products and pick the companions. Shoppers see these next to the product and choose which to add. Use the edit icon on a row to narrow which variants are offered.
- Fill in Bundle product name. This is shown as the bundle line in the cart and at checkout.
- In Bundle pricing, choose a Discount type and value, and fill in Discount name. See Pricing a bundle.
- Save, then Next, set placement on the Blocks step, then Finish.
You need at least one suggested product.
Bought together vs Add-ons
Pick under Storefront style.
Bought together — pre-ticked companion products next to the main product, with one combined total. The page product is part of the group, so it is added along with the ticked extras and the discount applies to the whole thing.
Add-ons — unticked extras below add to cart. Only the extras are discounted. The page product is not tagged into the group, so the shopper can add extras with or without it and the offer still works.
That difference matters for pricing. On Bought together, a 20% discount comes off the main product and the extras together. On Add-ons, the same 20% comes off the extras only.
Where it appears
Show on does two jobs: it decides which product pages show the suggestions, and it defines which products count as a valid anchor for the discount. A shopper cannot claim the discount by pairing your extras with a product outside the targeted set — that combination is checked before anything merges.
Placement on the page is set on the Blocks step. See Where bundles appear.
How customers pick variants
Both styles offer, under Variant selection:
- Inline picker — a variant selector on each product row.
- Popup on add to cart — a popup asks the customer to pick variants before adding.
The inline picker is the default. Where the shopper is not asked, Hype uses the first in-stock variant your narrowing allows.
What the customer gets
The ticked products are added together as one group. In the cart and at checkout they merge into a single line titled with your Bundle product name, showing the saving crossed out and labelled with your Discount name.
Limits worth knowing
- A merge needs at least two lines. On Add-ons, a shopper who ticks exactly one extra and adds nothing else gets no bundle discount.
- Sold-out extras cannot be ticked. If the page product itself is unavailable, the add-to-cart button is disabled. See Sold-out products and inventory.
- One discount for the group. You cannot set a different discount per suggested product.
- The suggestions are yours, not automatic. Hype does not calculate what is frequently bought together from order history — you choose the extras.
- Bundles are always automatic. There is no discount-code option.
