How bundles appear in the cart and at checkout
Updated Sep 10, 20263 min read
A bundle's products go into the cart as separate lines, then merge into one line named after the bundle, with the saving shown as a crossed-out price. Volume discounts do not merge anything — the shopper's normal lines are discounted at checkout.
What the customer sees
- The shopper clicks the bundle's add-to-cart button. Every product in the bundle is added at once, each line tagged as belonging to that bundle.
- Shopify merges those lines into a single line. Its title is your Bundle product name, and its image is the bundle's image.
- The saving is applied to that merged line. At checkout it appears as a crossed-out original price with a label — the label is your Discount name (for example,
Bundle & save).
The two fields are different on purpose:
| Field | Where you set it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Bundle product name | With the products, on step 1 | Titles the merged cart line |
| Discount name | In Bundle pricing, on step 1 | Labels the crossed-out saving at checkout |
Why the merge and the discount are separate
Merging happens at full price, and the discount is applied to the merged line afterwards. That two-step order is what makes the saving render as a strikethrough instead of a silently lower price — the shopper can see what they saved.
The merge is done by a cart transform, which Hype installs on your store the first time you activate a bundle. The discount is a single automatic discount named Hype Bundle Discount (Do not delete) in your Shopify Discounts list. Every bundle on the store shares that one discount; each one keeps its own checkout label. Do not delete or edit it in Shopify — Hype manages its contents.
Adding the same bundle twice
If a shopper adds the same bundle twice — with different variant picks, say — the two additions stay separate groups and are each validated and priced as one bundle. They do not blur into one over-discounted line.
Tampering is not possible
The tags that group a bundle's lines are ordinary cart line properties, which a determined shopper can edit. So before merging, Hype checks the group against the bundle's own rules: the right products, in the right proportions. A group that does not match is not merged and gets no discount. For Frequently bought together, the anchor product is checked against your Show on targeting too.
Volume discounts
A volume discount does not merge anything and creates no bundle product. The shopper's normal cart lines stay as they are, and the discount is applied at checkout, labelled with the offer's Offer name. If you also run bundles, the volume discount deliberately skips merged bundle lines so a bundle is never discounted twice.
Editing and removing
The merged line behaves as one item. Changing its quantity scales the whole bundle; removing it removes the bundle. Shoppers cannot remove one product from a merged bundle line and keep the rest at the bundle price.
Cart drawers and third-party carts
The merge happens on Shopify's side, so any cart that reads Shopify's cart shows the merged line. Themes that render a cart from cached data before the transform runs may briefly show the individual lines; the checkout is the authority.
If the price looks wrong
Work through Wrong price in the cart. The usual causes are a bundle that has not been activated since a pricing change, a discount that another store discount is combining with, or a shopper's cart assembled before the offer went live.
